Algeria: Who is Abdelkader Bensalah, the future head of state?


Who will succeed President Bouteflika in the case of the application of Article 102 of the Constitution, as suggested by the Deputy Minister of National Defense, Chief of Staff of the PNA, Ahmed Gaid Salah, this Tuesday, March 26 ?

In this case, the second man of the state, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Abdelkader Bensalah will be the caremaker. The latter should, according to the text, take the interim of the head of state before organizing a presidential election within 90 days.

Abdelkader Bensalah is the current Speaker of the Council of the Nation since 2002, he was re-elected on January 9, 2013 and January 29, 2019.

The controversy about his origins …

Some politicians claimed that the current Speaker of the Council of the Nation Bensalah can not be the interim president because of his nationality or origin. They claim that he would be of Moroccan origin and would have been naturalized after independence.

A statement was issued in the past by the Speaker at the time of the spread of this rumor for the first time in 2013 stating that he was born in Algeria in a village in the region of Tlemcen, on the border with Morocco.
