ALGIERS- A total of 300 investment projects in marine and continental aquaculture were approved in the past two years, said Thursday, in Algiers, Director General of Fishing and Aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishing Taha Hamouche.

Of the 491 files submitted, 300 received favorable opinions and were validated by the National Center for Research and Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture (CNRDPA), “pointed out Hamouche at a technical workshop on the development of shellfish farming in Algeria.

“Investors who lead these projects have already identified the sites, conducted the necessary studies and are ready to order the equipment,” he explained.

These investments are part of 491 projects submitted to the authorities for validation, for a total amount approaching 200 billion dinars.

According to the same official, 70 projects in the field of aquaculture are being exploited, while another 70 will be launched soon.

In the first half of 2019, 22 aquaculture projects will be set up, according to forecasts by the Directorate General for Fisheries.

“What was achieved in ten years, we are now able to achieve in six months, since the assessment of aquaculture at the end of 2016 reported 25 completed projects,” said Hamouche.

According to him, this is an “unprecedented dynamism” in the field of aquaculture “which leaves us optimistic about our objectives for a significant increase in fish production”.
