AU: 34th Executive Council wraps up, several reports adopted

The 34th ordinary session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council, which kicked off Thursday in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), wrapped up Friday evening with the adoption of reports and decisions that will be submitted to the 32nd AU Heads of State and Government scheduled for 10-11 February.  

The meeting, which was attended by Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel, who leads the Algerian delegation to the work of this preparatory session for the 32nd Ordinary Session of the AU Summit, was marked by the review and the adoption of several thematic reports on strategic issues on the agenda of the continental organization.

Reports on Institutional Reform and AU Financing, the African Continental Free Trade Area (OCAFTA) and reports on the activities of AU Organs, Subcommittees of the Executive Council and Committees Ad hoc reports will be submitted to African leaders for their consideration before adopting them.

The AU Foreign Ministers also renewed the components of some AU bodies and committees, such as the Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, the Commission on International Law and the Advisory Council of the Union on Corruption and finally the Peace and Security Council.

The head of the Algerian diplomacy announced, after the operation of renewal of the components of the Peace and Security Council, that Algeria had been “brilliantly” elected within this body by the Executive Council of AU for a three-year term (2019-2022).
