Algeria “brilliantly” elected to AU Peace and Security Council

ADDIS-ABABA- Algeria has been “brillantly” elected to the AU Peace and Security Council by the AU Executive Council for a three year term from 2019 to 2022, said, Friday in Addis-Ababa, Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel.

This election “once again illustrates the credibility of the Algerian diplomacy, under the leadership of President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and his contribution to preserving peace and security in Africa and beyond,” Messahel told the press on the sidelines of the 34th ordinary session of the AU Executive Council.

“This is a perfect recognition of Algeria’s contribution to the regional stability, notably in the current situation marked by major crises,” he welcomed.

Algeria has already been member of the AU Peace and Security Council for three terms, in 2004- 2007, 2007 – 2010 and 2013 – 2016.

As part of its “active” membership of the AU largest body, Algeria has “greatly contributed to the execution of the Peace and Security Council mission, namely the prevention, the management and settlement of conflicts in Africa,” diplomatic sources said.

The election was held during a session of the 34th ordinary meeting of the AU Executive Council on the partial renewal of the African Union bodies.

The AU Peace and Security Council was set up in 2002, and made operational in 2004, as a restricted body of fifteen Member States. It deals with issues related to peace, stability and security in Africa.
