Algeria’s Presidential Elections 2019: Ghediri’s statements-” No comment,” Ouyahia

“I am convinced that the imcubent President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, will stand as a candidate for the upcoming presidential elections, slated for Thursday, April, 18, 2019,” announced the National Democratic Rally’ Secretary-General Ahmed Ouyahia.

Speaking, on Saturday, at a press conference held on the sidelines of the closing of the sixth session of his party’s national council, Ahmed Ouyahia said the president will send a letter announcing his candidacy. “My belief is that the president will run for a new term,” he underlined.

As regards to President Bouteflika’s state of health, the official assured that this is not an obstacle to his candidacy.

“In 2014, people voted for President Bouteflika when he was ill,” he said.

With respect to the program of the President, “the program’s letter will be addressed directly to people,” underlined Ouyahia, without providing more details or dates. Because, according to him, the decision belongs to the president. “He is the only one to decide,” he continued.

Regarding the number of the letters of intent to stand as a candidate in the presidential election scheduled for 18 April 2019, submitted to the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities and National Planning, the official slammed this phenomenon, assuring that new measures will be taken to prevent the repetition of this farce in the future. “There will be no more than ten presidential candidates,” he said.
Ahmed Ouyahia said he is part of a camp that considers Bouteflika “the best candidate”, declining to comment on the statements of candidate Ali Ghediri. “No comments on his statements,” he replied.
Earlier, Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, in his capacity as RND (the National Democratic Rally), Secretary-General, highlighted that this phase needs continuity rather change, reiterating his call for the incumbent President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, to run for a 5th presidential term.
