ALGIERS- The Constitutional Council is due to meet under the chairmanship of its deputy chairman, Mohamed Habchi, to take note of the death of its chairman, Mourad Medelci, and inform President of the Republic, in line with the institution’s rule of procedure.
Article 81 of the Council’s Rules of Procedure stipulates that “following the death or resignation of the Chairman of the Constitutional Council, the Council shall meet under the chairmanship of the Vice-President and take note of it”.
The same article also states that “the President of the Republic is immediately informed”.
The chairman of the Constitutional Council, Mourad Medelci, passed away, this morning, Monday, January, 28, 2019 at the age of 76, according to his relatives.
Born in 1943, Mourad Medelci died on Monday at 1:35 a.m following a long illness, said his family. In the evening of yesterday, several media rushed to announce the death of the Chairman of the Constitutional Council. The family of the deceased had then denied the rumors.
After graduating in Economics from the University of Algiers in 1966, Medelci held senior positions before taking up ministerial and institutional positions since 1988 to date.1988 to 1989: Minister of Commerce
1990 to 1991: Deputy Minister of the Budget
2001 to 2002: Minister of Finance, Advisor to President Abdelaziz Bouteflika
2005 to June 4, 2007: Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
2007 to 2013: Minister of Foreign Affairs. Then he returned to the post of President of the Constitutional Council, which was his last post.
The deseased will be burried at the cemetery of Ben Aknoun in Algiers’ province after the prayer of noon “dohr”.
