American choir “Morehouse College Glee Club” performs in Algiers, Thursday

A gospel spiritual evening was offered to the public of Tizi-Ouzou, on Wednesday, by the Glee Club of Atlanta Morehouse University in Georgia (USA), which gave its first show in Algeria on the stage of the Kateb Yacine Regional Theater.

Choir created in 1911, the ” Glee Club ” of the University of Morehouse enchanted the large attendance, nearly two hours, with songs of the black heritage, performed by vocal singers.

Often melancholic and at times rhythmic, the programmed songs tell both the spiritual Love, the peace and the African origin of the American blacks.

The first part of the show, directed by David Morrow, composed of spiritual songs which was a moment of peace and relaxation, inviting the soul to be lulled by the warm voice of the singers interpreting complaints that recall the suffering of black slaves. More joyful other songs such as “Hallelujah” followed to bring an area of ​​joy and hope.

The Glee Club, founded in 1911, at a private university established in 1867 to provide a higher education to African Americans who could not share white education in the southern states because of segregationist laws, paid tribute, in this evening, to one of its prestigious students Martin Luther King, performing two songs ” I Have a Dream ” and ” We Shall overcome ”.

A second and final show will be given by Gléé Club Morhouse college tomorrow, Thursday, at the National Theater of Algiers Mahieddine Bachtarzi, said the Deputy Head of Mission of the United States Embassy, ​​Lawrence Randolph.
