Voting for Upper House’s partial renewal begins nationwide

The renewal of half the members of the Council of the Nation (upper house of Parliament) started, Saturday, through a vote by the elected officials at the provincial and municipal assemblies.

The vote, through which 48 senators will be elected, comes in line with the presidential decree convening the electoral college and will be monitored, for the first time in such elections, by judges.

In November, President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika had signed a presidential decree convening the electoral college, in line with the Constitution, mainly Articles 91-6 and 119 (paragraph 3) and the organic law 16-10 of 25 August 2016 relating to the electoral system, especially Articles 107, 108 and 109.

The electoral college is made up of the members of provincial and municipal assemblies nationwide.

The last partial election of the  upper house of Parliament took place on 29 December 2015.
