9th FICA : “I am Not Your Negro,” “The other Side of Hope” winners of Grand Prizes


Documentary film “I am Not Your Negro” by Haitian Raoul Peck and feature film “The Other Side of Hope” by Finnish Aki Kaurismaki won the grand Prizes of the 9th International Film Festival of Algiers.

The documentary and fiction jury, chaired by Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane William Mbaye and academic Nabil Boudraa respectively, presented the prizes to the winners at a ceremony attended by Minister of Culture Azzedine Mihoubi.

“The Other Side of Hope”, recounts the life of refugees in Finland and their vicissitudes across Europe through the journey of a Syrian refugee, survivor of a bombing in Aleppo, who asks for asylum in this country after being separated from his sister in Hungary.

Fica’s Grand Prix Documentary, Raoul Peck’s “I Am Not Your Negro,” discusses African-American civil rights struggles, led by Black rights activists in the United States, illustrating the images of Martin Luther King, Malcom X and Medgar Evers.

This closing evening ended with the screening of Mahamat Saleh Haroun’s film “Une saison en France”,or ” A season in France”, a fiction that tells the story of Abbas, a French teacher in Central Africa who fled the war to France where he managed to to enroll his children in school and work in a market while waiting to regularize his situation.

Inaugurated on December 1st, the 9th International Film Festival of Algiers (Fica), dedicated to the engaged film, will wrapped up, on Sunday, after the screening of three films out of competition: “José Marti, the eye of the canary” of the Cuban Fernando Perez , “Naked feet in the dawn” of Canadian Francis Leclerc and the documentary “The child of the devil” of the French Ursula Wernly-Fergui.
