Algeria: Monks of Tibhirine beatified

The bishop Pierre Claverie and the seven trappist monks of Tibhirine, were beatified, today, December 8th in the province of Oran.

In this aspect, Pope Francis announced, in a gathering in St Peter’s Square on Saturday, and following the riciting of the Angelus, that 19 Christian religious men were beatified in Algeria.

“Today, in the Shrine of Our Lady of the Holy Cross in Oran, Algeria, Bishop Pierre Claverie and 18 religious men and women were beatified,” highlighted the Pope.
With these words, Pope Francis announced to thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square on Saturday the beatification of 19 martyrs.

In the spring of 1996, during the Algerian black decade, seven of the 19 French trappist monks based in their monastery in Tibhirine in the Atlas Mountains were kidnapped by an armed group, and, two months later, seven heads were found on a road near the city of Medea.

It is worth mentioning that Minister of Religious Affairs, Mohamed Aissa attended the beatification along other officials.
