The two-day round table on Western Sahara wrapped up on Thursday in Geneva. At the end of the works, UN Special Envoy for Western Sahara Horst Kohler has presented the final communiqué.
The communiqué says that the round table has been convened “by UN Special Envoy for Western Sahara Horst Kohler” in conformity with the Resolution 2440 of the UN Security Council.
The meeting saw the participation of the two parties to conflict, Morocco and the Polisario Front, and two neighboring countries Algeria and Mauritania.
According to the communiqué, the meeting has helped to “make an assessment of the situation, discuss the regional questions and coming stages of the political process on Western Sahara.”
The meeting has been marked by a climate of honesty, serious commitment and mutual respect, and a deep conviction to give priority to cooperation as the best means to curb the numerous challenges facing the region.
Another meeting or a second round table would be convened by the UN envoy in March 2019, announced the source.
On that occasion, Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel said that Algeria, as a neighboring country has always backed the efforts of the UN General Secretary and his Personal Envoy Horst Kohler. The support has been expressed by President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, during their meeting in October 2017.
During the two-day meeting with all its sessions, Algeria showed genuine willingness to make its contribution so that the two parties in conflict Morocco and Polisario reach rapid solution that guarantees self-determination of Western Sahara people, in line with the international law and UN Resolution.
Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel also expressed Algeria’s thanks to President Kohler for his efforts that led to the holding of Geneva meeting, which created a new dynamic in Western Sahara settlement process.
