The Algerian agricultural exports exceeded $57 million during the first nine months of 2018, said Thursday in Algiers Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia.
In the first 9 months of the current year, Algerian agricultural exports, estimated at 57,835 tons, reached 57,579,301 USD dollars, an increase of 37% compared to the same period of 2017, which had recorded 42,128 .2 tonnes representing nearly $ 43,985,568, PM said in an answer, read on his behalf by the Minister of Relations with Parliament, Mahdjoub Bedda, to an oral question by Parliament member Khemri Beldia, during a plenary session of People’s National Assembly, about “exported products repressed by some European countries for non-compliance with international standards”.
Regarding the concern raised by the PM about Algerian agricultural products exported to foreign countries, like France, Canada, Russia and Qatar, and “repressed”, Prime Minister recalled that “the parties concerned, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, had repeatedly raised the ambiguity surrounding this issue, asserting that the information relayed by the media was incorrect and inaccurate.
In this regard, Mr. Ouyahia said that “the statistics show that the national authorities have not recorded during the two previous years as well as during the current year, any refoulement of agricultural products for a phytosanitary problem or because of standards, “stating that” the only two notifications received, actually from Canada at the beginning of the year, are for a packaging problem, knowing that they were pasta and soft drinks “.
For the rest of the countries cited by the PM, namely; France, Russia and Qatar, he said that “the volume of agri-food exports to these countries, including Canada, has experienced a significant increase from 33, $ 4 million between 2013 and 2016 to $ 49.4 million in 2017. Since the beginning of the year, this volume is estimated at 33.7 million USD, he pointed out.
In addition, the Prime Minister reported an increase in the number of countries importing Algerian agricultural products from 47 countries in 2017 to 72 the current year, saying that “this is a tangible proof of the attractiveness of our agricultural product in many countries, such as; France, Germany, Spain, Russia, Canada, the United Arab Emirates and even the United States, which impose drastic phytosanitary standards for imported products “.
Moreover, Mr. Ouyahia affirmed that the government “reiterated, in its action plan, the commitment to continue the program of support to agricultural and rural development, adopted by the public authorities since 2009”.
