The beatification of a bishop and the seven Trappist monks of Tibhirine, is due to take place on December 8th in the province of Oran.

The ceremony will be presided over by Cardinal Becciu, who will represent Pope Francis at the ceremony.

A bishop, seven Trappist monks and 11 other religious men and women killed by extremists in Algeria in the 1990s.

Mgr Pierre Claverie and Companions will be beatified during a ceremony at the Basilica of Santa Cruz in the Algerian city of Oran on the feast of the Immaculate Conception.

As a reaction, Algerian bishops welcomed this watershed decision,  describing the event as a “great joy”. “May their example help us in our life today,” the bishops added. This beatification will be a call for the Church and the world to “build together a world of peace and fraternity”.

It is worth mentioning that Pope Francis officially recognised the monks as martyrs in January this year.

In the spring of 1996, during the Algerian black decade, seven of the 19 French trappist monks based in their monastery in Tibhirine in the Atlas Mountains were kidnapped by an armed group, and, a week later, seven heads were found on a road near the city of Medea.
