Algiers: 27 contending films at 9th FICA


Twenty movies, including fiction and documentary, will be in official competition at the 9th International Cinema Festival of Algiers (FICA) scheduled for 1-9 December, the festival’s Curator announced Saturday.

Speaking at a press briefing, Zhira Yahi announced the participation of nine documentary films, nine feature films as well as the screening of four works out of competition at this 9th edition.

Kamel Laïch’s feature films “La voix des anges”or ““The voice of the angels”  and Okacha Touita’s “Le droit chemin” or ““The right way”, will represent Algeria in this category, while “Enrico Mattéi and the Algerian revolution” by Ali Fateh Ayadi and “Choosing at 20”, an Algerian-Swiss coproduction by Villy Hermmann, will compete in the documentary category.

The 9th FICA will open with the Palestinian film “Wajib” by Annemarie Jacir, followed by   “Worker Melancholy” by Frenchman Gérard Mordillat, “Rusty Boys” by Luxembourg’s Andy Bausch, “A Season in France” by Chadian Saleh Harounou and “The other side of hope” of Finland’s Aki Kaurismäki.

The documentary competition will see, for its part, the participation of the films “The silences of Lydia” by the Burkinabe Aïssata Ouamara, Libre  or “Free” by the Frenchman Michel Tosca,” Central Airport FHT “by the German Karim Aïnouz or” Les enfants du hasard “or “Children of chance “, co-directed by Belgian filmmakers Thierry Michel and Pascal Colson.

Four works, out of competition, are also on the program of the 9th FICA, “Jose Marti, the eye of the canary” by Cuban Fernando Perez, “Naked feet in the dawn” of the Canadian Francis Leclerc, the documentary “The child of the devil “by the Frenchwoman Ursula Wernly-Fergui in addition to the latest-born director Rachid Bouchareb work;  “The Belleville cop “.

The organizers are also planning a meeting with French director André Gazut.
