UNAOC global forum: Algeria attaches paramount importance to culture of peace

Algerian Islamologist and former minister of Higher Education, Mustapha Cherif, said, Monday in New York, that Algeria, a “vanguardist in terms of peace and dialogue among civilizations,” attaches a paramount importance to the culture of peace for the prevention and settlement of conflicts.

In his remarkable intervention at the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) World Forum in New York, the Algerian thinker noted that “Algeria, because of its central geostrategic position, a crossroads of civilizations, and its history from Emir Abdelkader’s epic to the November message and the politics of national reconciliation, is a “vanguardist in terms of peace and dialogue among civilizations.

Professor Mustapha Cherif, who spoke at the eighth edition of this forum as an expert, highlighted “the major importance that Algeria attaches to the culture of peace,  dialogue of civilizations and living together.

“The recent Algerian initiative under the auspices of the United Nations, which led to the establishment of a world day for living together in peace, is a concrete illustration” (Mustapha Cherif).

Established in 2005 at the initiative of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, UNAOC works for a more peaceful and socially inclusive world by building mutual respect among peoples of different cultural  and religious identities, emphasizing the will of the majority of the world to reject extremism and accept diversity.

This year, UN officials “praised” the central role of youth in the fight against extremism.

“Young people have the power to transform entire regions, make them safer, more peaceful and socially inclusive” (Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser).

The UN chief said this year’s edition was held “in a context of religious, cultural and ethnic intolerance”, citing the Rohingya massacre of ethnic cleansing, the enslavement of Yezedis in Iraq, and the hateful rhetoric against refugees and migrants.
