Draft executive decrees relating to law on child protection submitted to government

Head of the National Body for Children’s Protection and Promotion (ONPPE) Meriem Chorfi affirmed, Tuesday, in Algiers, that the draft executive decrees of the 15-12 of 15 July 2015 relating to the protection of children are currently at the level of the Government’s general Secretariat.

In a statement to the APS, on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of the Rights of the Child, Ms. Chorfi said that the commission in charge of the drafting of the executive decrees relating to the law on the protection of childhood, has completed its mission and that “these projects are currently at the level of the General Secretariat of the Government.

In addition, the same official said that the ONPPE had received more than 600 reports of cases of violation of the rights of the child, from citizens, or even children themselves, via the toll free number (11/11) , launched last April, in addition to 17 reports via e-mail (launched last December) and others by post.

These reports, she said, concern cases of abuse, begging, economic exploitation or cases of violence or sexual assault, in addition to calls received from parents in need of support.

In this aspect, Ms. Chorfi pointed out that the toll-free number was one of the mechanisms put in place to ensure the social protection of children in danger.

“A report on the situation of children in Algeria and the achievements made in this area is being prepared by ONPPE, in anticipation of its submission to the President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika,” she pointed out.
