Algeria plays “fundamental” role in preserving peace in Africa

Algeria which has always “upheld” pan-Africanism, plays a “fundamental” role in the preservation of peace in the African continent, said Ibrahim Assane Mayaki, the Executive Secretary of the New Partnership for Africa (NEPAD).

“Algeria plays a fundamental role in the preservation of peace in the African continent and has always carried the torch of Pan-Africanism for a very long time,” the Nepad leader told the press on the sidelines of the AU summit, held in Addis Ababa.

The same official praised the initiatives undertaken by Algeria to help its neighboring countries.

The executive director of NEPAD, also former prime minister of Niger, recalled, at the same time, Algeria’s efforts to support Niger, notably by taking the decision to erase its debt.

For his part, the Commissioner of the African Union for Peace and Security (CPS), Smaïl Chergui, also welcomed the efforts of Algeria in the resolution of conflicts in the continent.

“When African Union forces were deployed for the first time in 2017 in Somalia, all contingents were flown in Algerian planes,” said Chergui on the sidelines of the official launch of the AU Peace Fund. .

This “remarkable and discreet” contribution from Algeria, “determined to promote peace in Africa, has left its mark in several regions of the continent, like the Sahel,” he said.
