Palermo: Need to reach solution based on inclusive dialogue, national reconciliation

Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia took part in a meeting organized in Palermo on Tuesday, by Italy in preparation for the International Conference on Libya.

The meeting, chaired by Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, was attended by Presidents of Tunisia Beji Caid Essebsi, Egypt Abdelfattah Al-Sissi, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, European Council President Donald Tusk, French Foreign Minister Jean Yves Le Drian, and the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Libya, Ghassane Salame.

On the Libyan side, the President of the Libyan Presidential Council Faiz Serraj and Marshal Khalifa Haftar took part in this meeting.

The participants were briefed by the Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, Ghassane Salame, who recalled the highlights of his proposals made to the Security Council on 8 November for a way out of the crisis in Libya. .

This was followed by a debate in which Ouyahia expressed Algeria’s “great concern” about the situation in Libya, recalling the efforts made by Algeria to “accompany the Libyans in the political process.


He also stressed the need to reach a solution to “preserve the unity of the Libyan people and the integrity of their territory”. To do this, this solution “must be based on inclusive dialogue and national reconciliation”.

As a reminder, Mr. Ouyahia represents the President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, at the Palermo Conference on Libya. He is accompanied by Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel, who also took part in this meeting.
