Algeria and the European Union (EU) will hold the 2nd session of their high-level dialogue on regional security and counterterrorism, Monday in Algiers, with a view to boosting practical cooperation and meeting the challenges posed by terrorism and radicalization.

The new session of this dialogue, launched in October 2017 in Brussels, will be co-chaired by Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on a working visit to Algeria.

The new meeting is part of the continuation of “collaboration” and “regular dialogue” between Algeria and the EU on the themes identified during the first session, namely: regional security, the fight against counter-terrorism and de-radicalization, as well as the implementation of the EU-Algeria partnership priorities of March 2017.

At the end of the first EU-Algeria high-level dialogue held in Brussels, the head of European diplomacy reiterated the Union’s determination to see the potential of security cooperation with Algeria fully realized as ‘Algeria is considered as’ a major regional partner of the EU’.

Federica Mogherini had expressed the hope that this high-level dialogue would be “a platform to strengthen cooperation” between Algeria and Europe.

“Algeria is “ready” to help and share with the EU its experience in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, assured, for his part, the head of Algerian diplomacy.

In this aspect, attendees at the first session of the Algeria-EU high-level dialogue on regional security and the fight against terrorism explored opportunities to develop cooperation between the two parties with a view to “unite the forces “to fight against terrorism and” support the efforts of Algeria “in terms of regional stabilization,” explained a diplomatic source.

“Algeria has a world-renowned experience in the fight against terrorism and could provide the EU with proven expertise in the field,” the source added, noting that the country is doing “considerable” work to secure its borders and play a “leading role” in stabilizing the region.
