Paris Peace Forum: Algeria calls countries to respect fundamental principles of UN Charter

Algeria called for the United Nations to maintain a “central role” in the promotion and the preservation of peace and security, Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia said Sunday in Paris.

“The UN must retain a central role in the promotion and preservation of peace and security,” the Prime Minister told the Paris Peace Forum in a speech, stressing that this “requires fundamental principles of the Charter of UN”.

“This requires respect for the fundamental principles of the Charter of the Organization, including the right of peoples to self-determination, the peaceful settlement of disputes and conflicts, respect for the sovereignty of States and their territorial integrity as well as non-interference in their internal affairs, “he said in a panel attended by Nigerian President Mahamadou Issoufou and the Prince of Monaco, Albert II.

The Prime Minister said these principles “deserve to be remembered”, noting that they are “flouted” in many situations.

On another level, the Prime Minister said that the world needs “more active” international cooperation against terrorism and transnational organized crime, “supporting the United Nations” to deepen the work already begun in this area and ensure strict implementation of the resulting decisions “.

He also called on the international community to “block” the divisions and extremism, stressing that Islam, a religion of peace and harmony, “should not be outraged for the crimes of terrorists that are, in fact, enemies of Islam “.

Regarding the fight against poverty, Ahmed Ouyahia said this “demands concrete action” from the international community.
