Chairman of the Council of the Nation Abdelkader Bensalah has bestowed on Saturday the Medal of National Order of Merit “Athir” upon French filmmaker Costa Gavras, granted by President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, in tribute to his works.
This distinction was awarded to Mr. Costa Gavras, author of the movie “Z” which won the Oscar for best foreign film on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the outbreak of the national liberation war.
Culture Minister Azeddine Mihoubi said Gavras’ distinction is “a recognition of his contribution to raising the profile of Algeria”, calling it “a pillar of culture” and “engaged artist (..) who believed in the justice of the oppressed peoples”.
Present at this ceremony were the Wali of Algiers, Abdelkader Zoukh and many Algerian cultural figures and filmmakers.
Filmmaker Costa Gavras hosted a conference at the 23rd International Book Fair of Algiers (SILA) on his film career, during which he expressed gratitude to Algeria.
