Renewable energy: Nearly 2,000 MW to be produced by 2020

Energy production from renewable energy would nearly hit 2,000 megawatts (MW) by 2020 through the involvement of Sonatrach group in the development of this energy, Energy Ministry Mustapha Guitouni announced Monday in Algiers.

Sonatrach will be the leader in the production of renewable energy by achieving a capacity of 1,300 MW, according to the Minister.

Adding the 343 MW of the existing power stations, the 150 MW planned for the next call for tenders for national operators and the projects supported by Sonelgaz, the capacity of Sonatrach will help increase overall production of renewable energies in Algeria to nearly 2,000 MW by 2020.

These projects are part of the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Program, initiated in 2011 and updated in 2015 with a view to achieving a global capacity of 22,000 MW by 2030.

Highlighting the repercussions of the development of these new sectors, the minister said that the implementation of the renewable energy program will create nearly 700,000 direct and indirect jobs.
