Western Sahara: UN Fourth Committee adopts resolution on Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination

The United Nations (UN) Special Political and Decolonization Committee ( Fourth Committee) adopted a resolution on Western Sahara, reaffirming the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination.

Under this resolution, the General Assembly has supported the relaunching of the negotiation process “with a view to reaching a just, long lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that will allow the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara”.

Commending the concerted efforts exerted in this regard by the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, the resolution welcomed the fact that the parties to the conflict, namely; Morocco and the Polisario Front, “have pledged to relaunch negociations and engage in these talks in good faith and without preconditions.

In the same document, the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (also known as the Special Committee on decolonization or C-24), is requested to continue to monitor the situation in Western Sahara and submit report at the seventy-fourth session of the General Assembly.
