Afripol, Interpol to sign cooperation agreement next January

Afripol, the African Union Mechanism of Police Cooperation and the Interpol will sign a cooperation agreement next January, announced the African Union Peace and Security Commissioner Smail Chergui on Monday in Algiers.

In a statement on the sidelines of the work of the 2nd session of Afripol’s General Assembly (GA), Mr. Chergui said that the latter “will sign, next January, an agreement with Interpol”, highlighting, in this context, ” Afripol’s “fulgurant” progress in a year, which resulted in the establishment of relations with international and regional organizations and the training of African police officers and their staffing with very sophisticated technical equipment that contributed greatly to the fight against crimes and violence.

For his part, Colonel Mustapha Lahbiri, Director General of the National Police (DGSN) and Chairperson of the General Assembly of the African Police Cooperation Mechanism (AFRIPOL) said that Algeria seeks to develop a “comprehensive and integrated” approach to help the international community, notably in Africa, meet collective security challenges.

“Aware of the impact of transnational criminality and terrorism on governance, peace and security, my country, under the reforms launched by the president of the Republic, seeks to develop a comprehensive and integrated approach aimed at backing the international community, notably in Africa, and meeting collective security challenges,” said Colonel Lahbiri the opening ceremony of the 2nd AFRIPOL General Assembly.

The DGSN expressed Algeria’s commitment to supporting AFRIPOL in achieving its goals and promoting the global police cooperation architecture.

Colonel Lahbiri also stressed the need to pool capacities to create a “strong and sustainable” alliance between the parties in charge of implementing the law and the public and private sectors, with a view to “effectively” combating the “sharp” increase in emergent criminality.
