Algeria, South Africa to promote peace, security in Africa


Algeria and South Africa are backing each other’s efforts at the continental level, mainly within the African Union, Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel said Wednesday in Cape Town.

 Algeria and South Africa are backing each other’s efforts at the continental level, mainly within the African Union,” Messahel said at the opening of talks with his counterpart, Lindiwe Sisulu.

Mr Messahel welcomed “the convergence of views and analyzes of the two countries on the major issues of common interest”, recalling that Algeria and South Africa “share the same ideals of peace, justice solidarity and pursue the same goals for the development of more democratic and equitable international relations and the establishment of peace and stability in Africa, based on their commitment and their duty to promote and defend interests of Africa in a rapidly changing world “.

Both officials seized this opportunity to reiterate their support for the Palestinian and Sahrawi causes.

They also held an exchange of views on the threats affecting the African continent, stressing the need to “further strengthen the dialogue between the two countries on these issues, including the fight against various factors of insecurity and the fight against terrorism and related scourges and illegal migration “.

In this regard, Mr. Messahel praised the role and efforts of South African diplomacy in seeking solutions to key African and international issues, including the promotion of peace, security and stability in the African continent.

The South African Minister, for her part, stressed “the convergence of views between the two countries on issues of common interest”, reiterating “the commitment and willingness of her country to continue cooperating, together with  Algeria, in all regional and international forums for the promotion of shared ideals “.

She praised “Algeria’s efforts and invaluable contribution to the promotion of peace and security in Africa and its commitment to the interests of Africa”, saying that South Africa “will continue to work with Algeria in this direction, in a coordinated and concerted manner, particularly within the framework of the African Union “.
