NGO Western Sahara Resource Watch (WSRW) warned, on Thursday,  that the Commission is attempting to mislead member states about the consultation process initiated to “comply” with the December 2016 judgment of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) which rejected the inclusion of Western Sahara in EU-Morocco Association Agreement.

“The European Commission is trying to get a new trade agreement with Morocco for the territory of Western Sahara, in defiance of the judgment of the Court of Justice,” denounced the NGO in a statement, released Thursday night on its website, saying that member states should vote on the trade arrangements in question on July 11.

According to the same source, the European Commission sent, on June 11, a draft amendment to the EU-Morocco trade protocols for approval.

The proposal aims, the statement said, to extend the scope of the EU-Morocco trade agreement to occupied Western Sahara, in order to circumvent the ruling of the European Court of Justice.

The ruling in December 2016 stipulated that no EU-Morocco trade or association agreement could be applied to Western Sahara.
