Child labour in Algeria exists at very low levels

Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security Mourad Zemali said, Tuesday, that child labour exists in Algeria but “at very low levels,” stressing the importance of joining forces to address the issue, mainly through reporting.

“The findings of the surveys carried out by the Labor Inspectorate at the level of the employers’ organizations revealed every time that child labor in Algeria exists but at very low rates,” said the minister who chaired with the minister of National Solidarity, Family and the Status of Women, Ghania Eddalia, a meeting on the occasion of the celebration of the World Day Against Child Labor, in the presence of the General Secretary of the General Union of Algerian workers (UGTA), Abdelmadjid Sidi Said.

Mr Zemali stressed the importance of exerting huge efforts in order to fight against this phenomenon.

For her part, Ms. Eddalia said that the prevention and fight against the phenomenon of child labor is a collective responsibility of public and private enterprises, civil society, associations and citizens.

In this regard, the Minister referred to the programs of the Ministry of National Solidarity aimed at supporting needy families, particularly in remote areas.
