National liberation war: ICRC gives over 30,000 archival documents to Algeria

Copies of more than 30,000 archival documents relating to the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) during the National liberation war were given Wednesday, in Algiers, by the humanitarian body to the Directorate General of the National Archives (DGAN).

These archives include more than thirty thousand documents and photos already made public by the ICRC.

Among the documents are, in particular, reports of visits to places of detention, official correspondence with the parties to the conflict, documents related to the creation of the Algerian Red Crescent (ARC) and assistance to Algerian refugees in Tunisia and Morocco.

“This handover of the archives is part of a partnership between the DGAN and the ICRC,” recalled the head of the ICRC delegation in Algeria, Catherine Gendre, during a ceremony organized at the DGAN headquarters.
