In recognition of quinoa as one of the world’s most popular health foods and a complete protein and fantastic wheat-free alternative, El Mostakbal “ Future” Association for Environment and Nature Protection in Mahdia, in coordination with the NGOs “Ain Abied” as well as Al-Qafila “ Caravan” Provincial Association for the Protection of Touristical Monuments and Historical Sites, Quinoa from the Andes to Oued Righ Oases’s first forum was held in El M’Ghair, El Oued province, under the slogan: “Quinoa … Food and Medicine.”
Several topics and activities were on the agenda of this event, including explanations, by both farmers and Ain Abeid NGO’s President, on how to grow quinoa and its cultivation prospects in Algeria.
Besides, videos on quinoa’s cultivation in several regions of the world, such as Peru, Bolivia, France and Morocco as well as its country of origin were screened.
Quinoa’s seeds of different types and colors have been presented amid a great interaction of the attendees, especially the farmers, who expressed their willingness and great determination to try planting this type of crop.
In this aspect, a lunch was organized by Al-Qafila NGO’s Chief to taste quinoa dishes of all kinds.
The participants paid a field visit to a quinoa crop camp of the farmer Mr. A. Said in the Municipality of Al-Marrara to find out the results of the experience of planting quinoa crop.
It is worth mentioning that quinoa dates back three to four thousand years ago when the Incas first realized that the quinoa seed was fit for human consumption.
According to WHFoods, quinoa “was the gold of the Incas” because the Incas believed it increased the stamina of their warriors.
