The speakers at 29th Arab Summit stressed the need, on Sunday in Dhahran (Saudi Arabia), to promote comprehensive peace and make peoples’ interest prevail in the resolution of crises in the Arab region.

In his speech before handing over the presidency of the Summit to Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz, the King of Jordan Abdullah II recalled that during the previous Arab Summit, held in his country, the participants reaffirmed the need to bolster and activate the joint Arab action and promote comprehensive and lasting peace in accordance with the international law, relevant United Nations resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.

The Palestinian cause will remain the foremost priority of Arab countries, he added.

The Arab world and the international community must provide the necessary support for the Palestinian refugees and enable the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to continue to provide its humanitarian aid until a just solution is reached, he stressed.

The King of Jordan also welcomed the “positive developments” in Iraq and their victory over the Daesh terrorist group.

As regards the Syrian crisis, King Abdullah II said that his country has supported all initiatives aiming at pushing the political process forward, adding that all efforts should support Geneva process and not replace it.

He underlined that the shared interest of Arab countries requires “countering any attempt to intervene in the internal affairs of Arab states, instigate strife and sectarian conflict.”

For his part, the Saudi King announced US$ 200 million donation to the Palestinians, of which US$150 million for the programme of support for Islamic endowments (wakfs) in Al Quds and US$50 million to the UNRWA.
