Community and corporate organizations are partnering with the Algerian government in order to launch a collective action aiming at settling the environmental problems in Algiers and launching an initiative to improve ecological sustainability and waste management in the city, said the Oxford Business Group (OBG) in a document published on its website.

In early February, the Algerian non-profit association SIDRA launched, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment and Renewable Energies and the Belgian Development Agency, the Ecodzair project, with the aim of increasing cooperation between the wilaya of Algiers and civil society groups in the environmental field, noted OBG.

As part of this initiative, ten environmental associations will offer workshops to strengthen the city’s existing capacity and engage local civil society in protecting public space by reducing illegal landfills and other types of pollution.

SIDRA took advantage of the February launch to sign a partnership agreement with PCA Belouizdad where it will implement its first awareness campaign.

The announcement of the Ecodzair initiative was followed in mid-February by the establishment of a pilot recycling program involving 20 hotels.

The program, resulting from an agreement between the hotels, the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts, and the Public Management Company of Technical Landfill Centers, will allow its participants to generate additional income through waste recycling. .

Once the pilot program is complete, all hotels, tourist establishments and classified restaurants will participate in this sustainable development initiative.

The green economy as a national strategy in Algeria

The project is part of a wider set of policies aimed at providing solutions to environmental problems and diversifying a hydrocarbon-dependent economy through the development of the green economy, said OBG, noting that in the area of waste management, the master plan focuses on waste recovery solutions, which notably require investments that can establish a competitive ecosystem.
