The very first question which comes to our mind is about the difference between Research and Search.
Search is try to find something by looking or otherwise seeking carefully and thoroughly, whereas research is the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. This is not all as there are many more differences between search and research that will be discussed in this article.
SEARCH
According to the definition given in dictionary.com, the search is:
- To go or look through (a place, area, etc.) carefully in order to find something missing or lost: I searched the desk for the letter.
- To look at or examine (a person, object, etc.) carefully in order to find something concealed (hidden): The police searched the suspect for weapons.
- To explore or examine in order to discover: They searched the hills for gold.
- To look at, read, or examine (a record, writing, collection etc.) for information: To search a property title; He searched the courthouse for a record of the deed to the land.
- To look at or beneath the superficial aspects of to discover a motive, reaction, feeling, basic truth, etc.: He searched her face for a clue to her true feelings.
RESEARCH
According to the definition given in dictionary.com, “Research is a diligent (hard-working) and systematic inquiry or investigation into a subject in order to discover or revise facts, theories, applications, etc.”
(Note: The word Re-Search is the repetition of the search activities, and it is different from the word
Definition given by Paul D. Leedy and Jeanne Ellis Ormrod, in their book “Practical Research Planning And Design”, 8th edition; “Research is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information(data) in order to increase our understanding of the phenomenon about which we are interested or concerned..” They also included following eight distinct characteristics about research project:
- Research originates with a question or problem.
- Research requires clear articulation of a goal.
- Research requires a specific plan for proceeding.
- Research usually divides the principal problem into more manageable sub problems.
- Research is guided by the specific research problem, question, or hypothesis.
- Research accepts certain critical assumptions.
- Research requires the collection and interpretation of data in an attempt to resolve the problem that initiated the research.
- Research is, by its nature, cyclical or, more exactly, helical.
CONCLUSION
On the basis of above information it is concluded that “SEARCH” means looking for something, and for “RESEARCH” we may say as looking into something.
