UNESCO’s Director-General, Irina Bokova, condemned, on Friday, the killing of three journalists in Honduras, Iraq and Syria.
Bokova has asked for investigations into the murders of these journalists. Highlighting the interest of defending freedom of expression and information, the UNESCO’s Director General urged the authorities to take all available legal measures to end violence against the media.
“Violence against the media must not go unpunished because it undermines freedom of expression, prevents journalists from doing their job, encourages some to practice self-censorship and deprives society of its right of access to information” , she said in a statement.
Deploring the death of a journalist in the context of the conflict in Syria, Irina Bokova reminded “all parties of their obligation to ensure the safety of journalists in conflict situations, according to the Geneva Conventions”.
