Aquaculture: 13 new investment projects to be launched by end of year

Investment in aquaculture will be strengthened in the near future by the launch of thirteen (13) new projects to be put into operation by the end of 2017, bringing the number of investments in this activity to 51 projects,  compared to 38 projects currently and 22 projects by the end of 2016, said, Monday in Algiers, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Abdelkader Bouazgui.

At a meeting organized at the headquarters of the Directorate of Fisheries and Fisheries Resources of the wilaya of Algiers to analyze the situation and prospects of this activity, the Minister reminded the objective of the sector to arrive at a production of 100,000 tons of aquaculture production by 2025, against a current production of 3,000 tons.

With a fishery production of 100,000 tons / year, which is expected to remain stable or even decline over the next few years, the target of 100,000 tons of aquaculture production will bring the overall production of the sector to 200,000 tons by 2025.

This objective, which is anchored in the Government’s Action Plan and for which the public authorities have put in place all the necessary means, is “realistic” in view of the interest of private investors, he said.

“The results achieved so far in terms of investment in the sector allow us to be optimistic about the achievement of such an objective,” he said.

He stressed that aquaculture plays a key role in the country’s food security, which has become the government’s “priority” and not a slogan.
