German Election: Merkel casts vote seeking fourth term

Millions of Germans are casting their votes in the country’s federal elections, BBC reported.

In this aspect, Chancellor Angela Merkel seeks a fourth term in office, keeping her conservative CDU/CSU alliance’s status as the largest presence in Germany’s parliament.

Its coalition partner, the social democratic SPD, is its main rival, while the right-wing AfD is likely to gain its first parliamentary seats.

Polling stations are open until 6 p.m. local time (12 p.m. ET), and the country’s two state broadcasters are expected to release an exit poll shortly after voting ends.
“The voter turnout is quite high here,” Markus Putzel, an election volunteer at a polling station in a school in Berlin’s Mitte district, told CNN. “It’s a bit like the German Bundesliga,” he said, referring to the German soccer league. “You know that Bayern Munich will always be the champion, but it is exciting to see who will come second.”
