Algerian Government will preserve social gains, PM Ouyahia says

Algerian Prime Minister, Ahmed Ouyahia, said the Algerian Government will preserve social gains, including the current subsidy policy, that is expected to be maintained next year, APS reported on Thursday.

In the 2018 Finance Act, the government does not intend to forego the current subsidy policy, particularly with regard to subsidized broad-based products such as oil, sugar and milk, Ouyahia said.

As a response to Members’ Questions, the Prime Minister has suggested the possibility of imposing a new tax on overseas travel, however, with the exception of 2018.

He said “such a measure would be able to rationalize the behavior of the Algerian consumer, in order to promote internal tourism,” adding that “these funds could be used to finance school canteens”.
