Congo: Clashes between demonstrators, police resulted in 27 deaths

Clashes between demonstrators and police have left at least 27 people dead, including three policemen in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Human Rights Watch reported on Thursday.

Most of the victims were in Kinshasa, where members of Bundu dia Kongo (BDK) Christian separatist sect were demonstrating against the government of Joseph Kabila and attacking a prison, on Monday.

BDK sect is influential in south-western DRC where it dreams of re-establishing Kongo kingdom, which flourished for centuries at the mouth of Congo River and reached its peak in the sixteenth century before the arrival of the European colonizers.

The members of the sect had already attacked in May a prison in Kinshasa where their self-proclaimed prophet, parliamentarian Ne Muanda Nsemi, was detained.
