Algeria to continue to be Mali’s loyal partner

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel, affirmed Friday, in Algiers, that Algeria will continue to be Mali’s loyal partner to restore peace and security, calling the Malians to embrace the peace process of the country, APS reported.

“Algeria will continue to be Mali’s loyal partner,” Messahel told the press after a meeting with his Malian counterpart, Abdoulaye Diop, during the 12th session of the Algerian-Malian Strategic Bilateral Committee in Algiers.

Mr Messahel added that he had discussed with Mr Diop the necessity for the Malians to “take ownership of this process which is theirs because Mali’s future is in the hands of the Malians”.

“We are committed to accompany Mali in this process,” Messahel said.

In addition, Messahel pointed out that he and Mr. Diop discussed issues related to terrorism, smuggling, organized crime, and clandestine migration.

For his part, the Malian official “welcomed the leading role played by Algeria in the peace process in Mali”.

Noting that the Algerian-Malian Strategic Bilateral Committee “provides an opportunity for the two countries to find a framework for consultation that reflects the specificity of their relations”, Diop said that Algeria “is not an ordinary country for Mali “.
