Statement condemning shelling of Russia’s embassy in Syria blocked in UNSC

Russia’s permanent mission in the UN said that its draft statement condemning a recent mortar shelling of the Russian diplomatic compound in Syria and calling it a terrorist attack was thwarted in the UN Security Council.

In a statement Tuesday, the mission said that it was “pointless” to continue working on the draft after some member states suggested removing “all important provisions” from the document “under a far-fetched pretext of the lack of evidence on the terrorist nature of the attacks.

“It added that such an approach indicates that these countries aim to spare militants who would be of use to implementing “destructive geopolitical plans” in the war-torn country.
