The Minister of the Interior, Local Government and Regional Planning, Noureddine Bedoui, has met on Thursday in Algiers, the Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and enlargement negotiations, Johannes Hahn, who is on a working visit to Algeria, APS reported on Friday.

During this meeting, Mr Bedoui has noted the “excellence” of the cooperation relations between Algeria and the European Union, stressing that this cooperation covers various fields, in particular security, exchange of information and training.

Focusing on the security aspect, which concerns both Algeria and the EU, the minister considered that this “requires the joint efforts” of both parties.

In this regard Mr. Bedoui noted “the instability that characterizes the neighboring countries”, which, he said, influences the security of Algeria and the EU, hence “the need for closer cooperation with the EU”.

Regarding the illegal migration, the fight against drug trafficking and crime, Mr Bedoui pointed out “the important role of the EU in combating this phenomenon”, recalling that Algeria had ” Terrorism during the 1990s and came out victorious “, before going on to the national reconciliation which remains” a great achievement for Algeria, a country that has regained its peace and stability, “he said.

“Algeria now has a new Constitution that puts it in tune with the developed countries,” he said.

Regarding the movement of people, Algeria has worked to “develop border areas with its neighboring countries, while investing in human development in these countries,” he added.
