During the first ten days of Ramadan (from May 27th to June 5th), over 3.6 tons of meat, foodstuffs and beverages which have not met the required standards, have been seized by the Trade Department of Algiers, the Department announced on Tuesday.
During the first days of the holy month, the agents of control and repression of fraud, have managed to seize 3,611 tons of meat (red and white) and various food products and beverages, which didn’t meet the required or standards, as well as for other reasons, related in particular to the non-respect of the regulated prices and the absence of label, the representative of the directorate of trade, El Ayachi Dehar, told the APS.
The amount of seized goods is estimated at DA 1.7 million, the same source said, adding that 18 traders changed their business activities during the same period.
Commerce officials carried out 4964 operations involving 1342 violations, Dehar said, adding that 42 commercial premises were proposed for closure and 11 were closed immediately.
In addition, 574 reports have been drawn up on all the recorded offenses, as part of the fight against fraud and quality control, he said, pointing out that 2189 retail traders have been subjected to these control operations, 138 economic operators active in the field of import and wholesale, in addition to 13 different production units.
Hygiene offenses were the most serious recorded cases, with 101 offenses, followed by 84 cases of unfit consumer food products, 50 offenses for sale of non-compliant products and 18 cases of no trademarks.
