The bluefin tuna fishing campaign launched on Friday and will run until June 24, according to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The statement said that 14 purse-seine vessels will participate in this campaign for a quota of 1,043.7 tonnes.
This quota attributed to Algeria by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (Cicta) was negotiated by the Algerian delegation which participated in its 20th extraordinary meeting held in November 2016 in Vilamoura (Portugal), said the same source.
For this purpose, all the “necessary provisions” have been taken for the best running of this campaign including “handing over of fishing licenses to the concerned tuna operators “, the ministry added.
In addition, in the framework of the strengthening of national capacities for bluefin tuna fishing, this campaign will involve trainee students from fisheries training institutes and schools.
