Islamic Solidarity Games 2017: Algeria ranked 6th

Algeria ended its competition in the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games, organized in the city of Baku (Azerbaijan), and ranked sixth with 40 medals (7 gold, 12 silver and 21 bronze), Radio Algerie reported on Monday.

Azerbaijan (host country) ranked 1st with 161 medals (75 gold, 50 silver, 36 bronze) ahead of Turkey, with 192 medals (70 gold, 65 silver, 57 bronze) while Iran ranked third with 97 medals (38 gold medals , 26 silver and 33 bronze).

Algeria obtained 40 medals in swimming (5 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze), Judo (1 gold 4 silver 6 bronze), and optical judoka (1 bronze) in addition to boxing (1 bronze) and athletics (1 gold 2 silver and 3 bronze) wrestling (3 bronze), Karate (1 silver and 2 bronze), Gymnastics (3 silver), Handball (1 bronze) and Football (1 bronze).

Nouria Merah, Head of Mission, in Baku said “It is a very honorable participation of Algeria, which achieved sixth place, improved its results compared to the previous two sessions.”

The Olympic champion in the 1500’s in 2000 said swimming allowed Algeria to top the overall standings thanks to the excellent performance of Sa’d Nafisa Chruati and Osamah Sahnoun, who won five gold medals in this competition.
