The cholera epidemic has worsened, in Yemen, resulted in the death of 209 people and more than 17,000 suspected cases, since the end of April in this country, which is under the war, said UNICEF in Sana’a on Wednesday.

In a tweet, UNICEF’s mission reported an “alarming increase” in people suffering from severe diarrhea and cholera.

“To date, more than 17,200 suspected cases of cholera have been recorded in Yemen, including 209 deaths,” the organization said.

A final report by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has recorded, on Monday, 184 deaths and 11,000 suspected cases in Yemen, including in Sana’a, which has been heavily affected by the epidemic, and where a state of emergency was decreed, on Sunday, by the rebels.

The epidemic is spreading in the country where hospital facilities and hygiene conditions have deteriorated due to the war between the elements of the Houthis armed movement and the loyalist forces supported since March 2015 by an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia.

“The number of suspected cases increased on average by 3,000 per day. We went from 9,500 cases, three days ago to 11,500, and today to more than 17,000, “said UNICEF spokesman Mohammed al-Assaadi, whose organization is participating, with World Health Organization (WHO) and the ICRC, to a joint committee in Sana’a capital to monitor the epidemic.

This phenomenon has caused a serious humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Approximately 19 million people, or about two-thirds of the population, are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, of which 17 million are hungry, according to the UN.

According to the WHO, those diseases have left more than 8,000 deaths and more than 44,500 injuries, since March 2015.
