The World Bank has congratulated the Algerian government on its social achievements and confirmed its support for the new economic growth model, adopted by Algeria, said, Saturday, WB’s statement following a visit conducted by a delegation of the International financial institution to Algeria, APS reported.
“The World Bank delegation has congratulated the Algerian government for its social achievements, including important steps taken to improve the welfare of the population, eliminate slums and reduce poverty, said the statement.
The delegation of the Bretton Woods institution said that its recent visit to Algeria aimed, essentially, at “getting a better and clear idea of the current dynamics, evaluating the World Bank’s interventions on the ground and reiterating its support to the ambitious new Algerian economic model, ” added the statement, quoting the spokesperson of this delegation, Merza Hassan.
“We are closely following the implementation of the new economic model because it could serve as a model for several countries that we represent,” Hassan said in the statement.
The official welcomed the partnership between Algeria and the World Bank, highlighting the Algerian contribution of $ 25 million to the International Development Association Fund,” a subsidiary of the WB that supports the poorest and most vulnerable countries .
The WB delegation was composed of ten (10) Executives, representing 100 out of the 189 World Bank Group members who participated in a tour in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
During the visit, the delegation was welcomed by Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal, whose talks focused on the country’s recent economic development and the measures taken by the government to mitigate the negative impact of the drop in oil prices.
In this regard, Hassan said that the delegation was able to “discuss the government’s vision for a new development model based on improved economic diversification” to accelerate growth and create jobs: “We will provide Algeria with all the necessary support, “he said.
For his part, Mr Sellal reiterated “the determination of the Algerian authorities to pursue the implementation of the new economic model likely to contribute to creating the best conditions to reach the emergence and contribute to diversify the economy”.
During their stay in Algiers, WB officials also met Finance Minister Hadji Babaammi, the governor of Algiers, as well as young entrepreneurs and representatives of the civil society.
