World Press Freedom Day, occasion to remain governments of their duty to respect right to freedom of expression

May 3rd has been declared World Press Freedom Day or World Press Day by The United Nations General Assembly, aiming at raising awareness among people of the importance of the freedom of the press, discussing solutions for addressing challenges as well as reminding governments of their duty to respect the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize has been introduced by UNESCO to award prominent individual, organization or institution that has made outstanding achievements and participated to the promotion of the freedom of the press.
The prize was first created in in 1997, named in honour of Guillermo Cano Isaza, a Colombian journalist who was assassinated in front of the offices of his newspaper, El Espectador, in Bogotá, on 17 December 1986. Cano’s writings had offended Colombia’s powerful drug barons.
During the ceremony, held every year to mark this occasion, UNESCO gathers media professionals, press freedom organisations and UN agencies to assess the state of press freedom worldwide as well as exchange views and expertise and review means to follow so as to introduce solutions to the obstacles hindering the freedom of the press in the world.
