The stress and depression are emerging in the Algerian society, indicated mental health specialists, who met on Sunday in Tizi-Ouzou, during a meeting on mental health, organized on the occasion of World Health Day.
Abdelkrim Messaoudi, psychiatrist said that depression is one of the most frequent mental attacks in Algeria alongside mood disorders and schizophrenia.
The psychiatrist explained that, like depression, the various mental disorders “are unfortunately under-diagnosed or late diagnosed, so that the delay in taking care of the disease, inevitably causes its evolution. ”
The consequences can be enormous, leading to suicidal behavior which is an alarming situation, he alarmed.
In this aspect, Lounes Bounous, director of Oued Aïssi’s psychiatric hospital (EHS), said that in 2016, “2,612 patients have been treated at the EHS for various mental illnesses; 21,222 people had psychiatric consultations while 3869 people consulted for psychological reasons. ”
