US State Department: John Desrocher hails Algeria's leading role in stabilizing the region

    Desrocher held discussions with an Algerian parliamentary delegation, on visit to Washington, composed of Vice-president of the People’s National Assembly (Lower House), Djamel Bouras, member of the Council of the Nation (Upper House), Hafida Benchehida, Spokesman of the National Democratic Rally party RND, Seddik Chiheb, and Head of the Algerian-US Parliamentary Group Abdelkrim Meheni.

    Algerian ambassador to Washington, Madjid Bouguerra, attended the meeting.

    Desrocher said that USA welcomes the stability in Algeria, despite turbulence, witnessed in neighboring countries and hails the leading and constructive role played in promoting regional stability and security, highlighting its considerable efforts exerted to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

    The official added that USA seeks to coordinate with Algeria for the stabilization of the region.

    The American diplomat highlighted Algeria’s contribution to the resolution of the Libyan conflict, stressing that Algiers and Washington are exerting efforts to bring Libyan parties together for an inclusive solution, based on a consensual agreement and national reconciliation, which restores peace, security and stability in the country as well as preserves  Libya’s unity, sovereignty, integrity  and the Libyan’s cohesion

    Desrocher also cited the huge potential of the Algerian economy, calling Algeria to diversify its economy and not to remain dependent on gas and oil.

    In the same regard, the official broached, during the meeting, the political reforms conducted in Algeria, particularly; the Revision of the Constitution, which consolidated the Rule of Law and the protection of liberties.

    The Algerian parliamentary delegation, which participated on Thursday in the National Prayer Breakfast organized by the U.S. Congress and attended by President Donald Trump,   also met with congressmen with whom it exchanged views on means to give a boost to their bilateral cooperation and partnership.
