Algerian-American anti-terrorist consultations

    •    Mr. Mark Adam, a senior adviser to the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs at the Department of State, arrived Sunday in the Algerian capital for a planned visit to end on Tuesday reported a statement from the embassy.
    •    Initial discussions were held Sunday in particular with the Council of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Kamel Rezag Bara, main interlocutor for the Americans in that "increasing" cooperation.
    •    "Both sides had an exchange of information and analysis on the sensitive issue of the use of weapons and the threat of weapons proliferation in the sub-region and a comprehensive assessment of major risk retrieval by terrorist groups, "the statement said.
    •    Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) would have strengthened in the region since the conflict began in Libya, according to European diplomatic sources. The network operates mainly in the Sahelian zone but could have established bases in Libya.

    •   Three major U.S. officials have recently visited Algeria for talks on these issues. This was the principal adviser to Obama for homeland security and counterterrorism John Brennan, 17 January, the coordinator of counterterrorism at the State Department Daniel Benjamin, who came 3rd and 4th March and the first days of June, the U.S. Commander for Africa (AFRICOM) General Carter Ham.
