Algeria: Third death by self-immolation

ALGIERS - An Algerian who had set himself on fire in the region of Bordj Bou Arreridj (southeast) succumbed to his burns, while another tried to do the same near Algiers, said Sunday corroborating official sources.

  •    A young man of 26, jobless and homeless, died Saturday in a hospital in Constantine (east) where he was admitted the day after he poured gasoline on himself in the town of Medjana near Bordj Bou Arreridj, reported the daily El Watan.
  •    This is the third self-immolation death recorded in Algeria since mid-January
  •    Sunday morning, an employee of the Local Development Bank (BDL service), tried to set himself on fire outside the headquarters of the Directorate General of that financial institution in Staouéli, a suburb west of Algiers, said to the AFP an employee of BDL.
  •    The man, father of a disabled girl, doused himself with petrol but could not set fire, some employees of the bank managed to stop him, the source said.
  •    He was protesting against the refusal of management to grant him financial assistance to care for his daughter.
  •    Most BDL agencies in Algiers have closed in solidarity with the contract employee for 18 years, the source said.
  •    This is the tenth attempted immolation known in Algeria since the start in January with a movement of social discontent that triggered riots in the wake of the "jasmine revolution" in Tunisia.
